pantry essentials.
no recipe today, just straight facts. these staples won’t change your life but they’ll make it much easier to decide that age old question, “what’s for dinner tonight?” !!
nutritional yeast (or nooch as some call it). its cheesy flavour is perfect for creamy sauces, salads, popcorn or anything that needs a little extra b12.
texturised vegetable protein. it’s an alternative to mince that cooks so easily (just absorb in hot water). find it in the health foods section at the fraction of the price of the vegan mince on offer today.
bay leaves. adds instant flavour to sauces and curries.
turmeric. makes things look and taste eggy when you need them to.
japanese curry. find it in the Asian section, it comes in a little box. it’s the easiest dinner to make, all you need is tofu, carrots and potato.
veggie stock cubes. always handy, I always forget to buy these.
italian herb blend/ middle eastern herb blend. perfect when you forget that one spice.
jars of curry (and coconut milk.) dinner sorted.
tin of tomatoes. my mum’s saving grace for any recipe is “oh just chuck a tin of tomatoes in there”.
beans. emergency dinner. need i say more.
I second all other comments regarding the nutritional yeast. I've found malted beer nutritional yeast to work best as a replacement for cheese. I tasted other (non-malted) nutritional yeast, and although they did great in salads, they had none of the cheesy-nutty flavor of their malted counterparts. Was I unlucky? Is it only me?
love this list! I know I can't live without nooch. It is definitely an essential!
